Hello,

I have two different exhibitions going on in the next few months here in Glens Falls, both of which I am proud of and excited for. I will be installing my first show, “Everywhere I Go, Someone Is There,” at the Second Floor Gallery in Glens Falls, NY on May 27, 2012. It will be hanging from May 28th - June 29th with a reception on June 21st from 6-8 p.m. in conjunction with the Glens Falls Art Walk. I have been working really hard and am super excited to present the group of images I have.

The second show I will be installing is hosted by Bev Saunders of The Shirt Factory in Glens Falls, NY. This installation, “Community Unseen”, will be another batch of different images all related to the people of Glens Falls and will be installed on August 18,2012. The installation will be on display from Aug 19 – September 30, with a reception on August 25th. As with “Everywhere I Go, Someone Is There,” I am extremely excited to present “Community Unseen.” Both these shows are jam packed with imagery that is dear to me and I can’t wait to share them!

You know what kind of work I like to shoot and if you come to these shows you will see it in person and also see how i like to present my work.

Hope to see a lot of people there!

Howdy again,

I have uploaded a few more photographs. 1 in the 2009 folder as well as 3 new photographs in the 2012 folder. In the 2012 folder you can see an example of a pin hole photograph that I explained last week or so. It’s and interesting looking technique and has plenty of room for experimenting. I have been doing test runs myself and although I am not exactly where I want to be with it yet I thought that this one came out pretty interesting.

Another thing you may notice about one of my new images is that it is slightly out of focus. Well I did that on purpose and it is called a soft focus. Sometimes I see a moment and I feel like it would be a little better and more interesting if it was slightly out of focus. What is interesting and fun about soft focus is that if you do it just so, the printed image from a distance looks in focus but as you get closer and closer you can realize it’s out of focus. This is another fun and easy technique that is done in camera and will open doors for experimentation. The hardest part is seeing a moment that can be enhanced with this technique and after that all you do if focus your image properly and then slightly rotate your focus so it’s a little off and then voila, art is created!

Enjoy this little technique…it can be uber fun!

-Philip J.

Hello!

Last time I posted I gave some pointers on creating old film style techniques in camera with the new DSLRs. I explained ways to create pin hole imagery and color filtered imagery in camera. Here are a few examples of those techniques.

The image on the left I took with the pin hole technique and the image on the right I took using a red filter like I explained. I used the red filter over the on camera flash. You can create different effects with the filters depending on how much of that translucent colored paper you use, as well as using it over the actually lens instead of the flash.

Now go out and experiment and create something amazing!

Hello!

I just wanted to post saying that I have posted some new photographs. There are ten new images, one in the new two thousand twelve folder, seven in the two thousand eleven folder and four in the two thousand nine folder. I have somemore images that I want to post but am holding on to. I have two new solo exhibitions going up this summer. One at the Second Floor Gallery in Glens Falls NY from June to July and a second one going up at The Shirt Factory at Ben Saunders Studio, also in Glens Falls NY, from August 18 – September 30. I am super excited and am working diligently to get these shows together and have enough work to not recycle any imagery.

In other news, I have been toying with old techniques in a new way to create some cool imagery. Being that I can quite ford to shot on film, even though I rather would, I try to be very minimal in post production and try to stick to creating an image in camera. So to get some cool effects in camera I have rigged up some things. I have been toying with pin hole photography as well as tinting images through the camera.

For pin hole all I did was drill a small hole in my lens cap. In doing so you have to make sure to center the hole and make it smooth so your image doesn’t have an odd shape. Pin hole will create a solid black frame around a small image that you have focused on. It may take a little while to get used to shooting pin hole cause the lighting needs to well equipped to capture an image properly. However there is tons of room and potential for experimentation.

The images tinting took a little more thought but not much. I decided I wanted to tint images red so I went out and bought transparent, red tinted wrapping paper. With this you can cut a piece and fold it up or cut a few pieces and put them together and tap them to your on camera flash or even the lens and create a natural tint without messing with Photoshop filters. It gives the images a rawer feel. You will have to mess with the pieces and the lighting to figure out how red, or whatever color you use, you want your images but the playing field if blown wide open with possibilities.

I hope someone finds this useful and good luck with creating amazing art!

Until next time,

- Philip J.

Hello again,

I have posted some self portraits from last year in the two thousand eleven folder. There are a few that I was a little iffy about posting but I did anyway. I like them so I hope you will too. Since it has been getting colder and colder I have spent less time out shooting and more time in sketching, drawing, and painting. I have some work that I am debating on putting up here soon. So stay tuned.

In other news I have landed an assisting job with photographer Catherine Wink, who has done some amazing things. She took a little hiatus to be a mom, but she is back on the horse and is in full gear. I am happy to be involved with her and excited to do some new things. Hopefully things will work out great!

I also mailed a letter to skateboard clothing juggernaut Altamont a few weeks back thanking them for their inspiration in the art world. They sponsor some amazing artisits, some of which have inspired my work. Well whats really awesome is that they responded to my letter and sent me some free gear. So I wrote them a thank you note with a few small paintings and who knows maybe they will like them and maybe that can be a start to something.

Well heres to twenty-twelve…a year of endless possibilities!!

- Philip J.

So it’s been getting colder out and the days are getting shorter. By the time five o’clock rolls around it’s virtually pitch black out. We have had a few nice days here and there but they will soon be gone. So with the cold and the lack of sun shooting photographs have become a little more difficult. However I have been burning the candle at both ends in the studio. I have been working on a number of new paintings and hope to stay motivated and creative as winter approaches. I intend to bang out as much art as possible while I’m not out shooting. So hopefully I will have a large body of new paintings accumulating over the next couple months. maybe I will even post some in the creative hands album to show you all where I’m heading.

Outside of that I have a couple of gnarly weeks planned. Two concerts in NYC next week , back in Middletown for a little while, then VA for a week in early Dec. So I am hoping for some nice days and the opportunities to get some new photographs. That would be amazing!!

Well thanks again and until next time,

I have just completed my first grant application. A grant through LARAC of Glens Falls. They are handing out four grants in January of two thousand twelve. The four artists will be announced in December, and I am hoping to be one of those four!

Aside from that I am working on some different ideas for portraits and self portraits, some of which I have already put into action. I have some new work that I am debating on putting on the site. SO you will have to stop by frequently to see if I have put it up!

Outside of art, I have a fun filled couple months ahead. Conan O’Brian in NYC November second, The Airborne Toxic Event in NYC on November eighteenth , Awolnation in NYC on November twenty- first, all followed by a trip to Virginia November thirtieth to December fifth to see a good friend and go to 96X Winter Meltdown music festival.

Trying to make art and stay smiling.
